In the days since we lost Dolly, several comments and decisions involving a comedian, an actor, a mayor and even a theme park social-media account have drawn criticism from fans.

People are obviously going to disagree about what is appropriate, what is comedy and how public figures should be honored. But this one feels especially sad considering just how much Dolly gave back during her lifetime.

She wasn’t simply one of country music’s biggest icons. Dolly spent decades helping children through her Imagination Library, supporting education, medical research and countless charitable causes. Her impact reached far beyond a stage or a record chart.

Whatever someone thought of her music—or even her personal views—there’s no denying she left the world better than she found it.

Maybe that’s the part worth remembering right now.
